New Science Technology
Chambers Dictionary of Science and Technology by Peter Walker, Widely recognized as the most comprehensive and authoritative single-volume dictionary of it's kind, The Chambers Dictionary of Science and Technology has been in print (under various titles) for 59 years. This new edition has been completely revised, updated, and expanded with 500 new entries and 100 in-depth panel entries. From astronomy to zoology, and genetics to general relativity, the Chambers Dictionary of Science and Technology encompasses all fields of science and technology and is an excellent resource for professionals, students, or casual browsers. Over 49,000 entries and 500 schematic diagrams provide carefully researched information and unrivalled coverage of scientific and technological language, including the most recent terms such as applet, false memory syndrome, and ozone depletion. New panel entries present detailed coverage of 20 major scientific and technical fields, and areas of special interest including genetics, space, and climate. The new and revised appendices give easy access to commonly consulted information including computing and Internet related acronyms, SI units, the plant and animal kingdoms, and a chronology of inventions and discoveries.
The Social Shaping of Technology by Donald A. MacKenzie, Technological change is often seen as something that follows its own logic -- something we may welcome, or about which we may protest, but which we are unable to alter fundamentally. This reader challenges that assumption and its distinguished contributors demonstrate that technology is affected at a fundamental level by the social context in which it develops. General arguments are introduced about the relation of technology to society and different types of technology are examined: the technology of production: domestic and reproductive technology; and military technology. The book draws on authors from Karl Marx to Cynthia Cockburn to show that production technology is shaped by social relations in the workplace. It moves on to the technologies of the household and biological reproduction, which are topics that male-dominated social science has tended to ignore or trivialise -- though these are actually of crucial significance where powerful shaping factors are at work, normally unnoticed. The final section asks what shapes the most frightening technology of all -- the technology of weaponry, especially nuclear weapons. The editors argue that social scientists have devoted disproportionate attention to the effects of technology on society, and tended to ignore the more fundamental question of what shapes technology in the first place. They have drawn both on established work in the history and sociology of technology and on newer feminist perspectives to show just how important and fruitful it is to try to answer that deeper question. The first edition of this reader, published in 1985, had a considerable influence on thinking about the relationship between technology andsociety. This second edition has been thoroughly revised and expanded to take into account new research and the emergence of new theoretical perspectives.
New York Hall of Science - The New York Hall of Science occupies one of the few remaining structures of the 1964 New York World's Fair in Flushing Meadow-Corona Park in the borough of Queens in New York City (USA). Today, it stands as New York City's only hands-on science and technology center. Morris County Academy for Mathematics, Science, and Engineering - The Morris County Academy for Math, Science, and Engineering is located in the town of Rockaway, New Jersey (a suburb of New York City, New York). Organizations involved with the Academy include New Jersey Institute of Technology, County College of Morris, The Research & Development Council of New Jersey, Verizon, The Morris/Sussex/Warren Workforce Investment Board, and the Morris County School of Technology. History of science and technology - The history of science and technology (HST) is a field of history which examines how humanity's understanding of science and technology has changed over the millennia. Without this understanding, development of new technologies would have been improbable. Mayor's Award for Excellence in Science and Technology - The Mayor's Award for Excellence in Science and Technology is given annually to recognise important members of the science and engineering communities in New York City. Candidates must live or work in the city.
